September is National Preparedness Month: Why Financial Literacy Is Key for Small Business Success

As we observe National Preparedness Month, the spotlight often shines on emergency response and disaster readiness. At Hayes & Associates, we believe preparation should also include financial resilience—especially for small business owners navigating today’s economic challenges.

That’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of a new 10-week financial education course designed specifically for Nebraska entrepreneurs and small business owners. It’s part of our commitment to equipping the community with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to thrive—not just survive.

Introducing: Hayes Smart Start: Financial Literacy for Small Business Owners

For over 40 years, Hayes & Associates has collaborated with Nebraska’s business and nonprofit leaders. We’ve seen firsthand how many entrepreneurs struggle to manage their finances despite being passionate and hardworking.

In response, we’ve developed Hayes Smart Start, a hands-on, 10-week program that offers real-world financial education for small business owners who want to strengthen their money management, pricing strategy, budgeting, and tax knowledge.

While the course is valued at nearly $1,000 per participant, tuition has been waived for applicants, thanks in part to support from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

“This course will change lives,” said Frank Hayes, president of Hayes & Associates. “We know a lot of small business owners are feeling a greater pinch these days in managing cash flow and debt. Learning more about money gives people real power. Business owners: Give us two and a half months, and we’ll give you tools to make lasting changes.”

Why Financial Preparedness Matters More Than Ever

Running a business in today’s climate is not easy. Even the most passionate entrepreneurs can feel overwhelmed by inflation, rising operating costs, labor shortages, and debt pressures. While most business owners have a strong understanding of their product or service, many lack a comprehensive grasp of financial principles that can protect and grow their business.

This course was designed to fill that gap.

Each session includes guidance from experienced Hayes & Associates professionals, covering topics such as:

  • Budgeting and cash flow management
  • Pricing strategies to ensure profitability
  • Tax basics every entrepreneur should know
  • Separation of business and personal finances

Participants also receive one-on-one support from Hayes team members to apply what they’re learning to their own businesses.

“We’re not just accountants crunching the numbers—we’re advisors and teachers,” Hayes said. “This course helps business owners go from just getting by to getting ahead.”

Designed with Nebraska Business Owners in Mind

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, more than 77% of Nebraska’s small businesses are solo operations—owners with no employees, often struggling to handle every aspect of their business alone.

“Thousands of business owners in our state are stretched thin and trying to figure it all out alone,” said Davida Adams-Stewart, senior manager of client experience and talent management at Hayes. “If they don’t know their numbers well enough, they can miss out on thousands of dollars in profit each year.”

Research shows that 50% of small businesses fail within five years, and that failure rate is even higher for culturally diverse businesses. Hayes Smart Start was created to help change those statistics by teaching foundational financial skills that empower owners to make confident, informed decisions.

Real Results, Real Impact

A pilot group of business owners completed the course this summer. The next session of the course begins in late September through a partnership with the Greater Omaha Chamber, with another cohort launching in November.

Hayes & Associates has set a goal of enrolling at least 80 small business owners in the course by May 2026. Applications for the November group are currently open.
